Jeff Merrill grew up in a sailing family and started racing Naples sabots on Alamitos Bay in Long Beach, CA.  He sailed for the Stanford University varsity sailing team and, a few years after graduation, took three years off to compete at the international level campaigning for the 1987 America’s Cup.  Jeff started out in Bermuda as a tactician for the Courageous Challenge and was later recruited to join the Heart of America team where he was sailing coach for Buddy Melges and raced as a navigator a few of the AC trials races held in the Fremantle, Australia.

Rob Piwowarczyk

Born in Poland, Rob spent his early childhood hiking and skiing the mountains of his homeland.

In the late 1970’s his family escaped the Communist controlled country and ended up in West Germany. Eventually the family was able to emigrate to the United States. After a short stay in New York they traveled west and established a new home in beautiful Colorado.

Rob has lived most of his adult life in Colorado as an entrepreneur, launching and ultimately selling two successful businesses and raising two beautiful daughters.

Elle Conwell

Elle Conwell has been around boats and on the water for as long as she can remember. The daughter of competitive sail boat racing parents, she grew up in Southern California and began racing her own sailboat in grade school.

Love of the ocean drew her to Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego, CA, where she studied and graduated with a degree in business. The campus proximity to the Pacific ocean was a daily reminder of the sea in her blood and kept her lungs constantly filled with salt air. She spent summers working with young children teaching them to sail.

An active scuba diver and swimmer, she interned with the U.S. Navy following graduation and worked training marine mammals. Daily contact with sea lions and dolphins reinforced her desire to continue working on the water.

Elle joined the JMYS team in January 2018 to manage our social media and marketing. Her duties have expanded now that she is a licensed California yacht salesperson. Learning the ropes to become a broker, she has already been involved with several listings and surveys. Elle is thrilled to be lucky enough to do something she loves and working with JMYS allows her to enthusiastically share her boating experience with others.

Elle was recently married and relocated to Florida to be with her husband, Doug. Her future is wide open for traveling and boating. After selling the Nordhavn 55 Starfish for us in California several years ago, you helped us create the detailed specifications and equipment selections to order our beautiful Nordhavn 63 Kokomo which is the best boat we have ever owned.

When it came time to sell, we knew you would be the best person to help us. We want to thank you for your marketing efforts to sell Kokomo. Very impressive – so many methods with photos, a custom website, social media, video and more all contributed to this result. There was a lot of competition in the market with so many Nordhavn 63’s for sale and you clearly made us stand out in the crowd and found a buyer in a very fast time frame.

2005 Selene 55 – Bella Luna – Sold in Ventura, CA

I consider Jeff Merrill to be a friend although our relationship started out as a buyer and a broker. Several years ago, Jeff help me find and purchase the Selene 55, Bella Luna. He was great to work with as a buyer’s broker and even helped me deliver the boat home from San Diego to Ventura.

Once settled in Channel Islands Harbor, I started a charter business and Jeff was kind enough to help me promote the business on his website. As my life changed, I decided it was time to sell the boat and, of course, I contacted Jeff. I also talked to some local brokers as well, but other than advertising on YachtWorld, they really didn’t have a lot to offer and I really wanted someone who knows trawlers leading the sales campaign.

Jeff and I talked about what he could do to help set my boat apart in the world of boat marketing. Jeff created a special website for Bella Luna, shot a video of Bella Luna, set up a Facebook page, and listed her on YachtWorld as well.

Jeff’s office is about 100 miles away from Bella Luna, so I agreed to help show the boat when he couldn’t be there, but he did end up showing the boat quite a few times which I know used up an entire day each time. The ultimate buyers contacted Jeff and initially told him they were several years away from making a purchase. Jeff told me they seemed qualified and convinced me since he was out of town that I should meet them for a tour. We hit it off and they decided they were very interested in the boat and Jeff took it from there.

Jeff wrote up the offer and was extremely professional in his transparent representation of both buyer and seller. He attended the sea trial and survey and made sure that everything was organized, and the transaction was successful.

I see Jeff on a regular basis as he is very active up in the Oxnard / Ventura area. As a professional yacht captain, I work with a lot of brokers and I can tell you that Jeff has developed an impressive business approach involving a lot of travel and time on the docks.

2007 Seahorse Marine 52 – Pegasus – Sold in Jacksonville, FL

When we decided to sell our trawler Pegasus, a Seahorse Marine 52, we asked friends and Internet trawler groups for recommendations for a broker. We had seen JMYS online but thought that they dealt mostly with Nordhavns. However, cruising friends of ours with a Nordhavn personally recommended Jeff and said he handled all makes of trawler so we gave him a call.
We are so glad we did. Despite our boat being in Florida, us in Scotland and him in California, we got first class, responsive service. Because of a series of unexpected problems on our end, not his, we never met Jeff until the Sea trial and Survey in Florida. Throughout this time, from talking about listing until we met aboard, his communication skills, minute attention to detail and excellent advice fostered a relationship that completely mitigated the lack of meeting in person.
His website is first class and his associate, Don Allen, helped make Pegasus look her best.
The sea trial and survey is always fraught with tension, but Jeff was a calming influence. His suggestion that, against conventional wisdom, we were present through both days, was a good idea. 1989 Holland 90 Lauren L. – Sold in Charleston, SC

Back in 1985 I engaged naval architect Ron Holland to design a sail boat that would express my architectural design approach to a ’90 cold molded sloop. We sailed Canadian and Alaskan waters for 3 years and spent years in the South Pacific, then sailed her through the Panama Canal to the Great Lakes and then back out to the Eastern Seaboard. As I am building another boat, it came time to sell Lauren L. I contacted Jeff Merrill, a family friend for decades. With Jeff, we developed a more extensive market plan to find a buyer. We put together a website and a comprehensive brochure which we mailed to brokers specializing in larger cruising sail boats.

Jeff’s efforts included visiting the boat in Charleston, NC to photograph and get better acquainted with her. It’s not an easy trying to promote a one-of-a-kind sailboat, but Jeff approached the project with enthusiasm and creativity. Jeff and I met regularly for updates and after nearly two years we found a buyer. Jeff was excellent with the many documents required for the sale.

Dear Jeff:

Now that the transaction is over I wanted to write you a referral letter in the hopes that others will know how you work above and beyond what I have seen other brokers provide. As you know, I had “Twins” listed with a major house for two years, and the only time I would hear from my broker was when it was time to renew the listing.
I have known about you for years through your reputation in the Nordhavn community and looking back, sending you an email to ask about listing our boat for sale was the first step in creating a successful sales strategy.

Offering a boat for sale in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico did have some challenges, but my first “wow” was when you flew down for two days to understand the boat, take photos and shoot the video (which still blows me away that were over 12,000 views by the time we closed).

1989 Offshore 40 cruising sailboat Defiant – Sold in Opua, New Zealand

My wife (Jenny) and I live in New Zealand. We saw our first Nordhavn, here over 5 years ago and the Nordhavn dream began for us.Not long after our first Nordhavn inspection, we met with Jeff Merrill in California. Jeff made us feel very welcome. His knowledge of all things Nordhavn is encyclopedic. Jeff showed us over all of the Nordhavn models that were in Southern California, despite knowing that we were still ‘only looking.’ Over the years we have continued to stay in touch with Jeff.

One of the must-do steps before we could purchase a Nordhavn was to sell our Offshore 40 sailboat. We tried to sell her locally, but did not have much success so we contacted Jeff. Even though we were located half a world away, Jeff listed and helped us sell our yacht here in New Zealand. The exposure of ‘Defiant’ on and other international websites made selling her here in NZ much easier.

Jenny and I are now onto our newest adventure; we are purchasing a Nordhavn 47.

Ray has the type of hands- on experience that his customer love.  He built his own 34-foot sailboat called “Distant Shores” and sailed her full time for five years in the South Pacific, including all the islands between California and Australia.  At the end of his adventure he sailed into Kauai and got a position as captain running a sport fisher for a year.

Back in California, Ray founded his own yacht brokerage called Dream Catcher Yachts in Dana Point.  The business grew quickly, propelled by Ray’s enthusiasm and practical boating knowledge and they became the southern California dealer for Pacific Seacraft, builders of cruising sailboats.  (As a side note, Ray was hired by Jeff Merrill and that is how they met!).  Ray and his sales team were incredibly successful and Ray Danet was named the Pacific Seacraft “Dealer of the Year” for two consecutive years. A large part of Ray’s success is his background and ability to excite buyers who want to have a great adventure.  Ray held a 100-ton Coast Guard license with celestial navigation and radar endorsements, and has done numerous deliveries all over the world.

After selling Dream Catcher Ray was hired by PAE / Nordhavn and within a short period he was one of the top salespeople. Ray travelled to boat shows all over the US.  After four years at the Nordhavn headquarters in Dana Point, CA, Ray moved east where he opened and managed a new office for Nordhavn in Stuart, Florida.

Ray has extensive experience on all Nordhavn models (having sold dozens of them new and used) and has piloted many different types of power and sail boats. During Rays tenure at Nordhavn, he participated in the Nordhavn 40 circumnavigation around the world sailing the Hawaii to Singapore leg spending over two months aboard.  His favorite part of that cruise was the Marshall Islands, which he now knows is one of the best cruising areas in the world.

The Nordhavn Florida office, under Ray’s leadership, became the top producing office and helped allow PAE to gain an important foothold on the east coast including regular attendance at the large Miami and Fort Lauderdale boat shows. After 8 years as the broker/manager in Stuart, FL Ray retired and along with his wife, Betty, enjoy cruising (on land) in their motor coach (but not able to completely walk away from the dock, Ray does have his Florida Yacht Sales license and is involved with JMYS on a part time basis to help cover the east coast)

Personable, friendly and a good listener, Ray believes that a real relationship with the customer starts after the closing. He takes great pride in giving systems and on the water training after the sale for both husband and wife. Jeff is a career marine industry veteran.  Over the last thirty years Jeff has worked in sales and marketing roles for several marine businesses including LeFiell manufacturing (spars), W.D. Schock Corp. (sailing dinghy’s and keelboats) and Magma Products (boat barbeques and accessories) before specializing in offshore cruising boats for the last twenty plus years.

Jeff spent seven years as vice president of sales and marketing for cruising sailboat builder Pacific Seacraft (Flicka, Dana, Crealock’s) before joining Pacific Asian Enterprises, Inc. in 1999 to become involved with production and sales of the Nordhavn trawler brand where he excelled for fourteen years.  He was the top sales producer three out of his last five years at PAE. Jeff understands boat construction from design to completion and enjoys training his clients to prepare them for offshore cruising. In January, 2014, he formed Jeff Merrill Yacht Sales, Inc., an independent yacht brokerage doing business on both US coasts and internationally with a focus on assisting buyers and sellers of cruising sailboats and trawlers.

In 2011 Jeff served as Commodore of Alamitos Bay Yacht Club in Long Beach, CA.  Jeff and his wife Pam race a Lido 14 when he is home in California. Their two children, Elle and Jonn, also have a passion for water sports.

A renowned trawler specialist, Jeff has spent time aboard hundreds of different trawler models. He loves meeting with trawler owners to ask questions, learn their techniques and share ideas. Jeff has sold hundreds of new and used cruising sailboats and trawlers.  His professional approach and friendly, low key sales style has created hundreds of friendships with many repeat clients and referrals. His close relationships with clients finds him travelling literally all over the world to places like; South Africa, Japan, China, Taiwan, Turkey, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Canada, Mexico and Panama.  He especially enjoys spending time with his clients after the sale, training and traveling on the boats he has helped them purchase amassing over 20,000 miles at sea on a wide variety of trawler brands and sizes.

Jeff was a crew member of the record breaking Nordhavn 40 Around the World (ATW) trip (Barbados to Panama and through the Canal) and joined the Great Siberian Sushi Run (GSSR) adventure with his son Jonn on a Nordhavn 62 when the fleet departed Japan and returned to the Ta Shing yard in Taiwan.

Jeff has written dozens of stories about his trawler experiences with clients for the and websites.  An accomplished author, he has also created a popular series of “Dialing-In-Your-Trawler” articles for Ocean Navigator magazine. Since 2001, Jeff has been a regular featured presenter at the PassageMaker magazine TrawlerFest events around the country. Jeff has also been a speaker at the Steve D’Antonio Trawler and Motor Vessel workshops and enjoys sharing clients and collaborating together with Steve to improve the professionalism in the marine industry.

Jeff is a CPYB (Certified Professional Yacht Broker) and holds his yacht broker’s license in California and Florida. A member of four yacht broker associations, Jeff has been on the CYBA (California Yacht Brokers Association) board of directors since 2013 and served as president for two years, 2015 and 2016.

Andy Nemier

Andy Nemier is a California licensed yacht sales person with 35 years of marine experience, and a self-confessed boating fanatic. All of his working life has been at sea. He is interested in all types of boats, whether trawlers, motor yachts or sailboats, though he is especially devoted to long range cruisers. The concept of a cruising couple, acting as owner operators of their own yacht and exploring to their hearts content, inspires Andy and his own experiences as a trawler owner will add great value to those considering heading out to sea.

Andy’s commercial offshore career is in the international offshore energy sector where he has worked as a saturation diving superintendent, submersible pilot, and offshore oil-field representative worldwide. (A career highlight was being a saturation diver in one the world’s deepest full-recovery salvages in 1997 – Salvage of the Greek Naval Corvette, KOSTOKOS, off Piraeus Greece). Andy has also been engaged as an advisor to several government organizations, and received government funding to act as a consultant for research into health and safety improvements in the marine industry.

Andy and his wife Julie, have been boating together since they moved to Canada (from England) in 1995, and have owned several sail and powerboats. They purchased a Nordhavn 62 in 2012, INFINITY and spent a year outfitting the boat to their tastes in preparation for live aboard cruising while crossing oceans. Departing Vancouver in 2013, they cruised through the USA, Mexico, and across the Pacific to Hawaii. Next they sailed south to Kiribati and onwards to French Polynesia (Bora Bora, Tahiti, Moorea, and the Tuamotus Islands). Their two adult children have joined them for several legs of their adventures. Scuba diving in the Tuamotus has so far been the highlight of their journey.

By November 2016, they had made their way to New Zealand, (via Rarotonga, Tonga, & Fiji).  With 16,000 nautical miles under the keel, and some recharge time in NZ, they’ll soon be on the move again.  Voyage plans are being made for Melanesia, with New Caledonia, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands, all on the current destinations list.  You can follow their adventures by going to their website blog,

Moving into yacht sales is a natural progression for Andy who has a passion for yachts and a natural ability to create lasting relationships with fellow long range cruisers. After passing his exam to earn his California yacht sales license, Andy continues to augment his brokerage experience with professional sales training and educational programs.

81 degrees in August sets cool record

Summer heat waves soar into the hundreds and a lot of hot air has been released in the US presidential campaign, but 81 degrees is not a record temperature.

Degree is an interesting word actually; it can be an inclination (the great pyramids are at 51 degrees) it can be an education (I have a college degree) and for the purposes of this article it is a documented measure of success for a northern latitude accomplishment that no other Nordhavn has ever seen.

Yes, we are talking about 81 degrees North, the 81st parallel – a few hundred miles from the north pole.
Records are not uncommon for the Nordhavn brand, and most involve distance; largest power convoy across the Atlantic – Nordhavn Atlantic Rally (NAR), the smallest production power boat to circumnavigate with the Nordhavn 40 Around The World (ATW) trip, the most of any power boat brand to circumnavigate, Nordhavn 57 through the Northwest Passage and more.
In August, 2016 the Nordhavn 68 Migration raised the bar and set a new mark for the farthest position north. This too is a distance accomplishment with some very demanding navigational considerations. The husband and wife team who own Migration (along with their famous dog Gulliver) prefer to keep a low profile – they don’t have a blog and didn’t do this for attention – they just thought it would be cool…and they saw the icebergs to prove it.

When Migration was built I was the salesperson and Steve D’Antonio was hired by the owners as the consultant, one of Steve’s first assignments on a new construction Nordhavn. We all made several trips to Taiwan and the Ta Shing yard did an incredible job building Migration. There were numerous innovations that have since been emulated. Call her a watershed boat, but the real story is the places she has travelled since she was launched and let’s just say Migration has lived up to her name and seen a lot of the world. Congratulations on your record setting latitude, I’m sure you were in Santa’s area code.

Steve D’Antonio has told this story the best as a crew member on the trip with his excellent and articulate dialog posts on Facebook. The adventure in this isolated (ice-o-lated?) part of the world has a fascinating history and an unspoiled beauty that Steve has captured in photographs. Photographs of abandoned coal mines, glacial lagoons, migratory birds, walruses and polar bears.
