For the second year in a row, Jeff Merrill was asked to join the judging panel. The team of judges are tasked with recommending products, evaluating the nominees and picking the final winner.  The Ocean Navigator panel is an experienced group of marine technology experts and voyaging sailors:
Ben Ellison, marine electronics guru and the guiding force behind Panbo.com;
Ellen Massey Leonard, circumnavigator and frequent contributor to ON;
Steve D’Antonio, marine systems consultant, writer, photographer and ABYC Master Technician;
Jeff Merrill, marine writer, yacht broker and power voyaging expert;
Paul Exner, sail training/sea trial instructor and marine writer;
Lawrence Husick, son of Chuck Husick who is carrying on Chuck’s tradition of marine writing as a contributor to ON;
Roger Hellyar-Brook, marine systems expert.
Jeff commented, “It is an honor to be asked to study the broad field of new marine products and participate in the judging of what is most innovative.  The fellow judges are highly respected and represent a unique field of boating experts. Ocean Navigator is a wonderful publication that I am thrilled to write for, and the Chuck Husick award is a fitting tribute to an incredible person.” Merrill added, “The ROKK charge + is a great solution for boaters who want to charge handheld devices while outside, offshore and in the elements”.

John Hoffman

John Hoffman grew up in Clark, NJ.  From age 11 through 18 he spent his summers on a private island 3 miles off of Milbridge, ME – 30 miles north of Southwest Harbor. This is where he learned the basics of living on and around the ocean. Summers were spent fishing, hunting, boating, and operating the diesel tractor and other heavy machinery that his family used to take care of business on this isolated island.
John attended the Franklin Institute in Boston and studied Mechanical Engineering. He moved to Stuart Fl. in 1972 and after a short while got a job with Stuart Angler. Together, they built semi-custom balsa cored fiberglass boats that were downsize designed from PT boats. John also enjoyed a short stint at Salerno Boat Works and an additional 8 year run with Stuart Yacht. His trade skills were mostly mechanical fabrication and welding, but included some electrical and lofting which he enjoyed the most.
In 1989 John started his own boat service company, Palm City Marine. He did a lot of repairs and upgrades to all different makes of boats and subcontracted to some local yards and builders.
In 2003 he was hired as a subcontractor with PAE/Nordhavn which was still new in Florida and growing quickly.  They liked his work ethic and systems knowledge so much that John was hired as the Nordhavn Commissioning Manager shortly thereafter. While at PAE, John was involved in the commissioning of new Nordhavns and service work for Nordhavns that came through Florida during their travels. He has worked from stem to stern, from anchor light to bilges and is intimately familiar with just about every trawler system installed.  John met Jeff Merrill back in 2003 and they have remained close friends ever since including a two-day delivery of a new Nordhavn 68 over to the Bahamas and back during a December cold snap.
In January of 2015 he retired from Nordhavn and rekindled Palm City Marine back into business doing repairs and custom installs at the former Nordhavn Stuart long dock and pier.  John’s product knowledge, systems skills and friendly, helpful attitude have prepared him for the next phase of his career, being a yacht broker for JMYS.  John has his yacht salesman license in Florida and is eager to work with many current clients and also looking forward to helping new buyers and sellers.

JMYS Welcomes John Hoffman

JMYS is very proud to announce that John Hoffman has come on board full time as a yacht broker to assist our trawler buyers and sellers.  John has completed his credentials to become a licensed and bonded sales person in Florida, and has also joined YBAA (Yacht Brokers Association of America).

John’s entire career has been forged in the marine industry.  His boating background goes back to his youth and his focus for the past several decades has been on yacht systems installations and mechanical trouble shooting which has allowed him a great deal of time on the water and stem to stern access on legions of trawlers.

In 2003, John was hired by PAE/Nordhavn to become their commissioning manager in Stuart, FL and during his twelve years with the company John oversaw the outfitting of dozens of new builds as well as a never-ending fleet of Nordhavns passing through Florida that required Johns attention and expertise.

John met Jeff back in the early days of the PAE Florida office collaborating with new and used Nordhavn clients and the two have remained close friends ever since.  Johns product knowledge of trawlers (especially Nordhavns) is all encompassing and he has probably crawled all over every boat that has come through his dock.

When Nordhavn moved their Florida office from Stuart to West Palm Beach, John re-opened Palm City Marine (a yacht service and repair company he has owned for decades) and began welcoming a loyal stream of clients who only wanted one person touching their boat, John Hoffman.  The relationships forged by being a good listener and a hard worker, not to mention that time can catch up with a body that is not designed to squeeze into bilges and chain lockers forever, John approached Jeff to join the JMYS sales team at the end of 2017.

That was easy, the answer a very loud “Of course!” John is a natural to work as a yacht broker.  Very few people are as knowledgeable about trawler operations and systems.  He has been a boater all of his life and enjoys helping people.  John is very diligent with follow up and has already been working with potential buyers for his first listing, the Nordhavn 60 Chopin located in Stuart, FL.

As we launch into the new year of 2018 we are very excited to have John Hoffman on the team.  Please let John know that you have heard this great news.  You can easily reach John by cell phone 772.215.3720 or by email: John.Hoffman@JMYS.com.
